Ely's Peak is located in Short Line Park near Gary-New Duluth. At the trailhead follow the wooden path into the woods that will lead up to the old railroad path. Take this path right until you reach the old Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway tunnel. The old railway was abandoned in the 1980s, and today many people today enjoy biking, hiking, snowshoeing and rock climbing around this area. If you are interested in rock climbing, you will see many rock climbing routes around the tunnel.

You'll see many trails branching off before the tunnel. Follow the main trail to the right. There are two trails on the right: One goes straight up, and one is flat and goes around. Take the flat one, which is the Superior Hiking Trail. You'll follow this trail and the blue markings around the peak. It will eventually fork off, and there will be little signs for it, but you'll keep left. Follow the blue markings all the way to the top, and enjoy the views. Make sure to come back in the fall!

If you enter the tunnel, be sure to watch for falling rock. Also, bring a flashlight because it gets very dark in the middle of the tunnel.
