Whittington Beach Park sits along Honuapo Bay at the site of a once thriving fishing village. While that fishing vilIage no longer exists, some of its historic remains can be seen within the park.
At one time, a commercial pier allowed fishing boats to dock, along with allowing for the transfer of railroad cargo from trains that serviced the town and the nearby Hutchinson Sugar Plantation. While that dock had been rebuilt following past earthquakes and tsunamis, it was the bombing of the dock by the US military in order to eliminate potential points of landing by the Japanese following the attack on Pearl Harbor that would ultimately leave the dock in its current skeletal state. That pier can be viewed at the park's southern end, where the concrete ruins sit amidst the crashing surf.
Building foundations and slabs sit throughout the park, though these days they hold only picnic tables. The beach here is rocky and the surf not suitable for swimming, however an outer protective rock barrier shelters a pond that is good for wading. Sea water here is cool as it mixes with the cold fresh water springs that dot this side of the isIand. It's possible to walk to the edge of the land at low tide and see that springwater flowing out from the land.
The park contains picnic tables, grassy areas as well as covered pavilions for eating, showers and bathrooms, and allows camping after the park closes at night.
It's worth noting that Whittington Beach Park sees far fewer people than the more popular Punalu'u Beach Park located six miles up the road. That gives visitors to Whittington a large relatively quiet park area for their activities.
There are outdoor showers and flush bathrooms located inside the park, however there is no drinking water here.
There is no fee to visit the park, and hours are 7am to 7pm daily.
