Kulanaokuaiki (Shaking Earth) Campground is a primitive backcountry campground in the mid-elevation interior of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

The campground contains 9 walk-in camp sites - 4 lying along a paved walking path that each contain a picnic table and flat area for setting up tents. 5 additional sites lie in the backcountry. A hard-to-find path (marked by cairns which will put you in the right direction, though it took some looking around for us to actually find the tables) leads away from the main campground and to the backcountry sites.

Campers can park at the small parking area and carry their gear to their chosen site. A vault toilet and trash cans are located next to the parking area. There is no water of any kind at the campground.

The 4 main sites are set in a clearing, and each can see each other as there is very little foliage and no natural barriers between neighboring sites. Though sites are set a fair distance from each other.

The campground is at an elevation of 3200' so nights can get cold compared to the rest of the island. Fires are not allowed at the campground.

Sites are all first come, first serve. Sites are $10 per night, payable at a self-pay station in the parking area. RVs are not permitted at the campground. The road to reach the campground is narrow and winding with several blind spots - drive carefully.
