The Owhi Campground Trail runs alongside scenic Cooper Lake. It can be combined into a loop with the Cooper River Trail that runs a bit closer to the shore, but be warned that this route is a bit overgrown and is easy to lose the trail in areas.

You can begin from the Boat Ramp or Owhi Campground. Find the sign and follow the Owhi Campground Trail as it heads generally northwest. Although the lake is within sight most of the time, the trail doesn’t walk right alongside the shore.

Continue until reaching Pete Lake Trailhead. This is the turnaround point, unless you wish to continue further.

On the way back you can hike the same way you came, but I’d suggest trying to follow the Cooper River Trail that stays right along the shore of the lake for something different. I say “try to follow” because this trail is unfortunately overgrown, and easy to lose in spots. If you try it and don’t enjoy the bushwhacking, you can always walk back up to the Owhi Trail above and hike it the rest of the way. But being right alongside the lakeshore is worth the rough trail in my opinion, and there are several great swimming/fishing spots along the way.

Regardless of whether you take the upper or lower trail you’ll find yourself back at the boat ramp and the end of the loop before long.
