Hyas Lake is a large, shallow lake in the Cle Elum River Valley of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, located just past the end of the Cle Elum Valley Road. The lake is easy to access via a flat, easy hike. It is perfect as a short day hike, but can also be overnighted by enjoying one of the many campsites along the lake. While not quite as spectacular as some of the other high alpine lakes in the area, the hike is not strenuous and is a great choice for families with small children or anyone looking for an easy adventure.
Begin at the Tucquala Meadows Trailhead at the end of the long gravel Cle Elum Valley Road. You’ll then follow the Deception Pass Trail as it heads generally northward up the Cle Elum River Valley.
The trail passes a beautiful meadow area with a view of Cathedral Rock across the valley. Continue onward until you reach the southern shore of Hyas Lake. You’ll begin to see several good looking campsites as you work your way up the lake. Even if not spending the night, these campsites are a great place to take a break and also generally offer the easiest access to the lake.
You can continue as far up the long lake as you wish. There are some sections of boardwalk, then the trail begins to ascend steeply as it leaves the lake behind (you’ll want to turn around before this unless continuing for a longer adventure!).
Once you’ve had your fill and enjoyed the lake, return to the trailhead the way you came.
