Cajon Pass to Inspiration Point is a 26.7-mile point-to-point route in Angeles National Forest that hugs the northeastern edge of the San Bernardino Mountains. The route begins at Cajon Pass, a mountain pass that separates the San Bernardino Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains, and follows the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) to Inspiration Point. It consists of a well-maintained singletrack trail that winds through canyons and crosses scenic ridgelines lined with California chaparral. Panoramic views include the Mojave Desert, San Gabriel Mountain Range, and San Bernardino Mountains. After a recent rain, you may find lush green hillsides, distant snow-covered mountains, and flowing water in some of the otherwise dry riverbeds.

This route showcases the stunning beauty of the San Bernardino Mountains, with panoramic views, lush forests, and a variety of flora and fauna. This route is all uphill, taking visitors through various ecosystems with a total elevation gain of approximately 7,194 feet. Ideal for experienced hikers, this route provides a challenging yet rewarding journey along one of the most iconic trails in the United States.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The hike begins at Cajon Pass, easily accessible from the I-15 freeway. From the starting point, you'll head north on the PCT, gradually ascending through a series of switchbacks. The trail initially meanders through chaparral-covered hillsides, offering expansive views of the Cajon Pass and the surrounding desert landscape.

As you continue, the trail enters the San Bernardino National Forest, where the scenery transitions to lush pine and oak forests. The elevation gain becomes more pronounced, and hikers will encounter a mix of steep climbs and gentle ascents. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including deer, coyotes, and a variety of bird species.

Midway through the hike, you'll pass through the picturesque Swarthout Canyon. The trail here is well-maintained and provides a peaceful respite with its shaded groves and running streams. This is a great spot to take a break and refuel before continuing your ascent.

The final push to Inspiration Point involves a series of challenging switchbacks that lead to higher elevations. The effort is well worth it, as the summit rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Mojave Desert, and on clear days, even the distant peaks of the Sierra Nevada.
