Hiking from Manker Flats to the top of West Mount Baldy is a rewarding and challenging adventure that offers stunning views and diverse terrain. This 8.5-mile round trip takes you to the summit of West Mount Baldy, standing at 9,988 feet, and provides a memorable experience for hikers seeking to explore the beauty of the San Gabriel Mountains. The Mount Baldy area is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts; however, West Mount Baldy is less visited than the neighboring Mount Baldy, which means opportunities for solitude on the summit. The route can be used for hiking, running, and backpacking.

The hike begins at Manker Flats Campground, where ample parking is available. The initial section follows a well-maintained fire road (Baldy Road) for about 0.6 miles. Here, you’ll encounter San Antonio Falls, a picturesque waterfall that provides an excellent photo opportunity.

From the Ski Hut, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged. Continue your ascent towards the Baldy Bowl, navigating through rocky terrain and switchbacks. The hardest part of this hike is the push to the top of Mount Baldy, which involves a strenuous climb, but the panoramic views from the top make it all worthwhile. You’ll leave the tourists at the top of Mount Baldy and turn left on the West Mount Baldy Trail to get to your destination. The West Baldy Trail is short and less steep than the climb to get to Mount Baldy.

At the summit of West Mount Baldy, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Los Angeles Basin, and, on clear days, even the Pacific Ocean.

This route is an out-and-back and follows the reverse journey back down to the start.

Safety and Considerations:

  • Prepare for rocky and uneven terrain.

  • Check weather conditions before heading out, as the trail can be hazardous in inclement weather.

Permits and Parking

  • An Adventure Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required for parking at Manker Flats Campground. Passes can be purchased online or at local retailers.
