This challenging route offers an escape from urban life, leading adventurers from the foothills up to the high elevations of Angeles National Forest, finishing at the Red Box Picnic Area. Ideal for seasoned hikers, this trek provides a vigorous workout with rewarding views and a variety of natural and historical features along the way.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The journey begins at the Mount Wilson Trailhead in Sierra Madre, where hikers start the ascent through a landscape that quickly transitions from suburban to wilderness. The trail climbs steadily, offering scenic overlooks of the San Gabriel Valley and progressively steeper terrain as you approach Mount Wilson.

Highlights along the way include passing by numerous trail camps that once served as rest stops for 19th-century travelers and explorers. Each camp has its own unique history, adding an element of historical intrigue to your hike. As you continue, the path takes you through dense chaparral, shaded oak woodlands, and past streams that provide tranquil spots for rest and reflection.

Upon reaching Mount Wilson, hikers can explore the observatory and enjoy expansive views across Los Angeles County and beyond. The final segment of the hike descends slightly to the Red Box Picnic Area, a popular stopping point for hikers and a perfect place to relax before arranging transportation back to the trailhead.
