This loop is perfect for those seeking a full-day hiking adventure near Los Angeles, offering challenging climbs, rewarding summits, and breathtaking natural scenery.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The adventure starts at the Mount Wilson Trailhead on the well-maintained Mount Wilson Trail. The first segment ascends through chaparral-covered hillsides, offering panoramic views over the city.

You’ll leave the Mount Wilson Trail after about a mile and head up a series of switchbacks leading to a steep ridge. Be prepared for direct sun exposure, as there is little shade on your way to Jones Peak.

After approximately 1.5 miles, you'll reach Jones Peak, standing at 3,375 feet. The peak provides a spectacular vantage point for a break and photo opportunities. The trail continues, following a distinct ridge trail/firebreak through oak woodlands and chaparral towards Mount Hastings.

The path briefly descends before making a steep climb up a sandy and rocky slope to the Mount Wilson Toll Road. A fixed rope aids the final ascent. You'll follow the toll road for about a mile before reconnecting with the Mount Wilson Trail for the descent. Watch carefully for the trail junction, as it can be easy to miss.

TERRAIN AND DIFFICULTY

The hike is strenuous, with steep sections and a total elevation gain of just over 4,000 feet. The trail is generally well-defined but includes rugged, rocky, and sandy areas.

PARKING AND PERMITS

Street parking is available at the trailhead. It can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to arrive early. No permits are required for day hikes, but always verify local conditions and regulations.

SAFETY AND CONSIDERATIONS

Weather: Be mindful of the weather as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.

Water: Bring ample water, as reliable sources are scarce, especially on the initial ascent to Jones Peak and Hastings.

Wildlife: The area is home to wildlife such as lizards, rodents, various birds, deer, and occasionally bears. Rattlesnakes are also common; stay vigilant, especially on warm days.
