Woodbury to Happy Camp is a 25.2-mile route through Tonto National Forest, located west of Superior, Arizona. It starts at the Woodbury Trailhead and travels through Happy Camp Canyon and Reavis Canyon. This route combines singletrack and dirt road trails, traversing the Superstition Mountains and skirting the southern edge of the Superstition Wilderness. It is rated as moderate to strenuous, with an overall elevation gain of approximately 5,171 feet, and is open to trail runners, hikers, backpackers, equestrians, and mountain bikers.

The route traverses Sonoran Desert grasslands and oak woodlands, featuring rolling hills and abundant vegetation, including colorful spring wildflowers and a variety of cacti.

The trail rises and falls across ridgelines and through picturesque canyons, showcasing colorful geology with panoramic views of the Superstition Mountains to the northwest, Picketpost Mountain to the south, and the Apache Leap Formation to the east.

FLORA AND FAUNA

This area is home to a diverse array of plant life, including towering saguaro cacti, spiny cholla, and palo verde trees. Flowering ocotillo and a variety of wildflowers add splashes of color to the landscape, especially during the spring season. The canyons' fauna includes mule deer, coyotes, javelina, red-tailed hawks, and the occasional golden eagle. Lizards, rattlesnakes, and Gila monsters also call this area home.

TRAILHEAD PARKING

Parking at the Woodbury Trailhead is generally accessible, with no fees required. However, conditions can vary, and it's recommended to check with the local ranger district regarding current conditions and/or plan to use a high-clearance vehicle when accessing the trailhead.

WATER
Water in Reavis Canyon and Happy Camp Canyon fluctuates seasonally and with recent weather. While you may find streams or springs during wet seasons, these can dry up in drier periods. For current water conditions, consult recent trail reports or the local ranger station. Always carry sufficient water and a treatment method if you plan to use natural sources.

SAFETY AND CONSIDERATIONS

  • Carry an adequate water supply and have the ability to purify water, as sources are scarce.

  • Prepare for extreme temperatures, common in desert environments.

  • Stay informed about the weather to avoid being caught in dangerous conditions, especially in canyon areas where flash flooding can occur.

  • Always let someone know your route and expected return time for safety.
