Starting from the picturesque town of Oracle, Arizona, this 10.6-mile out-and-back hike to the American Flag Trailhead offers an immersive experience into the natural beauty and historic charm of the Arizona Trail (AZT). This route includes a short section of the AZT, nestled in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, and provides hikers with a moderate challenge and the opportunity to explore a diverse desert landscape rich in flora, fauna, and history. 

The hike begins in Oracle, where you'll hop on the Oracle Ridge Trail #1. It meanders through classic Sonoran Desert scenery and offers expansive views of rolling hills and distant mountains. The path is well marked and well maintained with moderate ups and downs and some steep sections. After approximately 2.2 miles, you'll veer onto the AZT / Cody Trail #9. This trail guides you past High Jinx Ranch, culminating at the American Flag Trailhead, which serves as the turnaround point for your journey.

FLORA AND FAUNA

The area around Oracle leading to the American Flag Trailhead is home to a variety of Sonoran Desert flora and fauna. The saguaro cactus, ocotillo, mesquite trees, manzanita, prickly pear cactus, and more are common plants. You may also see jackrabbits, coyotes, woodpeckers, desert tortoises, rattlesnakes, and other animals. The hike begins in Oracle, where you'll hop on the Oracle Ridge Trail #1. It meanders through classic Sonoran Desert scenery and offers expansive views of rolling hills and distant mountains. Besides being well marked and maintained, sections of the path include both flat terrain and moderate climbs.

PARKING AND PERMITS

Parking is available in Oracle and at the American Flag Trailhead. No permits are required for day hikes on these trails. 

SAFETY AND CONSIDERATIONS

  • Water: Carry sufficient water as there are no reliable water sources.

  • Sun Protection: The trail is exposed with little shade. Wear sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

  • Weather: Check the weather forecast before your hike. Be prepared for changing conditions and start early to avoid the midday heat.
