The Big Indian Trail to Steens Mountain summit is a remarkable 14-mile point-to-point hike, beginning at the South Steens Campground. This trail, guiding hikers up the Indian Gorge Headwall, culminates at the impressive summit of Steens Mountain.

Steens Mountain, a notable feature in southeastern Oregon's high desert, is a vast fault-block mountain stretching about 50 miles. Renowned for its diverse ecosystems and geological uniqueness, it offers a range of outdoor activities including hiking, camping, bird watching, and photography. The environments here vary from alpine to rugged canyons, providing a dynamic hiking experience.

Peaking at around 9,733 feet, the mountain's summit grants hikers sweeping views of the region. The Steens Mountain Loop Road, partially paved and partially gravel, allows access to various trailheads and viewpoints along the mountain, blending accessibility with adventure.

The trailhead is conveniently located at the rear of the South Steens Campground. It’s advisable to sign in at the trail register and acquaint yourself with the trail regulations, as this marks your entry into the Steens Mountain Wilderness.

Beginning with a crossing over Little Indian Creek, the trail then heads north into the gorge. You'll be surrounded by lush vegetation, meadows, and aspen groves. The path gently climbs eastward through the gorge, making for a serene hike.

Scattered along the Big Indian Trail are several primitive campsites, perfect for a long day hike or an overnight backpacking trip.

The trail becomes more challenging as you near the headwall of the gorge. Here, the trail transitions into the Big Indian Headwall Trail, a primitive path best suited for experienced hikers. The ascent is steep and navigation can be tricky, as the trail is faint and you'll climb over 2,000 feet in just about a mile and a half.

Once the steep ascent is conquered, follow the gravel road to the parking area at the base of Steens Mountain. A short dirt road path leads to the summit. This hike requires a prearranged shuttle for pick-up at the base of Steens Mountain on Steens Mountain Loop Road.
