Continental Divide Trail: Montana-Idaho Section 30C

The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail spans nearly 3,100 miles across 5 states from Mexico to Canada, traversing a vast array of different environments and landscapes along the way. The CDT can be completed as a single thru-hike that will take 4 to 6 months, or by section-hiking smaller segments. The Montana-Idaho portion of the CDT features nearly 1,000 miles of diverse mountain terrain. You’ll pass alongside the lofty peaks of the Anaconda, Bitterroot and Beaverhead Mountains; walk through the rugged and remote Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex; and finally arrive at the “Crown of the Continent” that is Glacier National Park. In this guide we’ll take a closer look at Montana-Idaho Section 30C.

Section 30C is actually entirely in Canada. This short 4 mile stretch of trail is what thru-hikers may choose to hike to get from the international border to the Waterton Park Townsite. Please check the international border crossing regulations and requirements in advance, although for US citizens entering Canada the process (at time of writing) is pretty straightforward - simply call Canadian border patrol and report your entry once you have cell service.

At the border you’ll find the monument with a scenic backdrop of the lake. There is also a boat dock and great swimming hole here.

From here the trail is relatively unexciting. It spends most of the time a bit away from the lake in the forest. There are a few small climbs but nothing too strenuous.

The next highlight is Bertha Bay. This is an absolutely gorgeous bay on Waterton Lake. If the weather is warm be sure to stop here for lunch and a swim. There is also a picturesque boat dock perfect for diving off into the lake.

After Bertha Bay is a moderate climb up to an observation point. This provides a great view of the lake as well as the first views of the Waterton Townsite.

From here its an easy gradual downhill jaunt to the trailhead and the end of your trek. The Townsite Campground offers walk up hiker/biker sites for those looking to camp. From Waterton its possible to catch a hiker shuttle back to the Chief Mountain border crossing on Highway 6.
