The Old Rugged Cross Trail is a short trail located in the center of the hot springs area in the town of Tecopa.
The hike climbs a rocky hill, gaining about 120' in elevation to the site of a bench and a large wooden cross standing atop the town. Views look out over the surrounding desert community and the Tecopa Ecological Reserve.
Upon looking around, the complexity of the surrounding landscape reveals itself slowly. From the natural mineral springs pools at several different establishments immediately around the mountain, to the Amargosa River which emerges from its underground route as it passes by the basin wetlands beneath the slope, to the mountains in the distance that capture dramatic lighting for those lucky enough to make the trail climb at sunrise or sunset.
Continuing southward, the use trail traces the slope down the hill, wrapping toward the road before cutting behind a developed hot springs pool and paralleling Tecopa Hot Springs Road back to the dirt parking area. In all, the loop is under a half mile. The climb is a bit technical, as it traces slippery rock up a slope, however is pretty easy. Given the number of campgrounds and resorts in the area, there really aren't many options for trails or walks, so the Old Rugged Cross climb is a good way to stretch your legs and get a view of the town of Tecopa.
Parking is in a dirt lot at the southeast corner of Elias Road and Tecopa Hot Springs Road near the public trash facilities. There is no drinking water available in the hot springs area and no cell service in the town of Tecopa. The peak can be windy and brisk. Visitors should prepare for these conditions.
