The Cougar Woods Loop is a lovely 3+ mile loop through La Pine State Park. The hike is mellow without much elevation change. In addition to exploring the lovely pine forest of the area the trail also passes alongside the Deschutes River for a section. You’ll also have the chance to make a short detour to view the “Big Tree” - the largest Ponderosa Pine in the world.

To begin, park at the lot off the State Park Road. You can hike the loop either direction, but I’d recommend heading east and hiking it in a clockwise direction to save the best for last.

The trail winds through the forest and eventually comes to a junction with the Big Tree trail. Go left to see the tree, otherwise turn right to stay on the Cougar Woods Loop. You’ll cross a parking lot and pick up the trail on the other side.

Continue along through the pine forest until you cross the State Park Road. The trail will curve and then head toward the Deschutes River. This section is the highlight as you hike alongside the river with occasional great views.

You’ll come to a large day use are with restrooms and picnic tables. Continue along the Cougar Woods Trail until you once again cross the State Park Road and come to the parking lot where you started.
