Reavis Valley Trail #109 is a 34.2-mile out-and-back through the eastern Superstition Mountains. The trail begins near Apache Lake and winds its way south, passing through the historic ranch site of Elisha Reavis. It goes through areas with desert grassland, chaparral brush, and piñon-juniper woodland along with open valleys featuring flowing creeks, cottonwoods, and sycamore trees. 

The trail winds up and down crossing ridgelines and picturesque canyons featuring colorful geology. Some sections of the trail are rocky, rugged, and remote, and trail conditions may vary.  Please contact the local land managers for the most up-to-date information about trail conditions before heading out.

This is a moderately rated route with an overall elevation gain of 4,522’. The Reavis Valley Trail #109 is open to  hikers, trail runners, backpackers, equestrians (mountain bikes are not allowed within the Superstition Wilderness).

HISTORY

Elisha Reavis was a homesteader who settled in the area in 1874. This route passes right by the ranch he built. At the site of the ranch visitors can still find flowing water and a few apple trees remaining from an old orchard that was planted by Elisha.

00.00 - Start at the Reavis Ranch Trailhead (northern terminus).

03.50 - Pass a side trail leading to Reavis Falls.

04.70 - Castle Dome on the west side of the trail.

06.10 - Windy Pass.

08.30 - Junction with Frog Tanks Trail #112

09.40 - Arizona National Scenic Trail joins the Reavis Valley Trail #109

10.00 - Pass junction with Fire Line Trail / Reavis Ranch Site

14.00 - Reavis Saddle.

15.00 - Enter Rogers Canyon.

17.00 - Rogers Trough / Reavis Ranch southern terminus and turnaround point.

19.00 - Turn right for Reavis Valley Trail #109.

24.00 - Stay to the left and enter Reavis Valley and the Reavis Ranch site.

28.00 - Windy Pass. 

34.20 - End at the Reavis Ranch Trailhead (northern terminus).

TRAILHEAD LOCATIONS

The route described here goes north to south, however, either direction would be fine. Access to these trailheads may require a high clearance vehicle.

  • Northern Trailhead is located off of Reavis Trailhead Road / Forest Road 212.

  • Southern Trailhead is located off of Forest Road 172A.
