The Highline Loop Trail #520 is a 38-mile out-and-back along a national recreation trail in southwest Colorado. The trail is accessed from the Kennebec Trailhead which is located northwest of Durango. It is a scenic, high alpine trail that passes through lush forests of aspen, spruce, and fir trees. You'll walk over sandstone and enjoy incredible mountain views along Indian Trail Ridge. Keep your eyes peeled as you hike, occasionally, herds of elk can be seen below the ridge, to the west. The trail is moderately rated and open to runners, hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders, (mountain bikes are not permitted in certain areas of this trail).

Highline Loop Trail #520 never dips below 10,000 feet. This trek requires visitors to be prepared to exercise at a high altitude for the duration of the journey. Along the trail, the elevation ranges between approximately 10,450' and 12,200', with an overall gain of 5,593'.

The Highline Loop Trail #520 connects to numerous trails throughout San Juan National Forest, making it easy to alter the route and adjust the distance to explore different areas leading off of it.

CAMPING AND PERMITS
