Mount Massive via CT is a 13.5-mile out-and-back route to the top of Mount Massive. The 14,421-foot Mount Massive is Colorado's second highest peak and the third highest in the contiguous United States.
The climb to the top is moderate to strenuous and features lush pine forests, alpine lakes, flowing streams, and colorful wildflowers. It's a standard class 1 route (just hiking) that doesn't require any technical climbing skills. The area is a popular place for trail running, hiking, and backpacking.
The Sawatch Mountain Range, which includes Mount Massive, was formed from tectonic lifting. Mount Massive's prominent peak is located along a 3-mile ridge that features five additional summits with elevations exceeding 14,000 feet!
From the trailhead at Halfmoon Creek, hike north and follow the Colorado Trail for about 3.1-miles to reach the trail junction at Willow Creek. From there, the Mount Massive trail heads west and ascends steeply eventually leaving treeline and entering an alpine tundra environment near the top.
WHEN TO VISIT
The ideal time to climb Mount Massive is from June through September.

This route takes place at a high elevation and visitors may need time to acclimatize.

It is a very popular hike that is frequented by many visitors. In order to minimize the impact on the environment, please stay on established trails and avoid cutting switchbacks.
