Mastodon Mine

The Mastodon Mine is an old gold mine, now a historic site, located near the Cottonwood Visitor Center in the southeast section of Joshua Tree National Park. It was intermittently in use for decades starting in the early 1900's and is one of over 100 abandoned mine sites in the park. There are still remnants of several structures at the site of the mine, including the shaft and tunnel that were used for extractions. 

Mastodon Mine can be viewed by hiking about a mile down the Mastodon Peak Loop Trail. The hike to the mine features scenic vistas and unique geology amidst a vast desert landscape. 

WATER AND WEATHER

The hike to Mastodon Mine is fully exposed with no shade or water. The best time to visit is during the winter when temperatures are cooler. Be sure to wear sun protective clothing whenever you travel and bring plenty of food and water. 

CONSIDERATIONS

Observe old mine sites with caution and never enter mine tunnels or shafts.
