Pacific Crest Trail: Oregon Section D is a 58.8-mile point-to-point section of the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail. It goes from Highway 138 north to Highway 58 (near Willamette Pass). Through this section, you'll traverse the Cascade Mountain Range across a fairly gentle terrain, passing through Fremont Winema National Forest, Mount Thielsen Wilderness, and Diamond Peak Wilderness. The trail is moderately rated, multipurpose, and open to runners, hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders.
This section features alpine forests, open meadows, scenic lakes, and volcanic peaks. In the higher elevations you will find mountain hemlock, fir, and whitebark pine while the lower elevations are dominated by lodgepole pine trees. The area is also home to a variety of animals including black-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, black bears, marmots, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, and pikas. Common birds include ravens, Clark’s nutcracker, and the Oregon jay.
