Mount San Jacinto State Park is a California State Park located in the San Jacinto Mountains in the middle of the San Jacinto Wilderness and is managed by the California State Department of Parks and Recreation. 

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mount San Jacinto (10,834’), the second highest peak in Southern California, is located within the state park boundaries. 

  • The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, one of the world’s largest and longest tramways which carries passengers from the desert floor up 6,000 feet to the pine forests of the San Jacinto Mountains. 

  • Pacific Crest Trail (PCT): a section of the long distance national scenic trail passes through the state park.

San Jacinto State Park offers a variety of recreational activities ranging from family-friendly to strenuous. Among the most popular activities are hiking, picnicking, climbing, bouldering, backpacking, horseback riding, and camping.

WHEN TO VISIT

The best times to visit Mount San Jacinto State Park Wilderness are in the spring, fall, and summer. Winter temperatures in the wilderness are usually freezing and snow covers the wilderness from November to April.

WILDERNESS PERMITS

Permits are required for both day and overnight use. Day use permits are free and available 24 hours a day the following locations:

  • State Park Headquarters in Idyllwild

  • Long Valley Ranger Station on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway side

Wilderness Camping Permits are $5.00 per person and are available at the following locations: 

  • Park Headquarters in Idyllwild

  • Long Valley Ranger Station on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway side

  • Online application (must be printed and mailed): Wilderness Camping Permit
