Bear Canyon Loop is a 19-mile loop through the San Gabriel Mountains east of Pomona, California. This is a strenuous trek with significant elevation gain and loss. It features scenic mountain views and includes a climb to the top of Mount Baldy (10,064’), the highest point in the San Gabriel range. This route is suitable for running, hiking, and backpacking.
The trail begins with a steep climb through oak trees, cedar, and fir in Bear Canyon. Within the first 3 miles, the trail gains more than 2,000 feet of elevation and reaches an exposed ridgeline amidst a sparsely vegetated landscape of chaparral and pines. Along the ridge, you will enjoy panoramic views as you continue the challenging climb. After 5.5 miles and over 5,000 feet of elevation gain, you will reach the top of Mount Baldy. Although you may have reached the highest peak, the loop is far from over.
You will descend Mount Baldy via the Devil's Backbone Trail and continue onto the Three T's Trail. While making its way to Icehouse Canyon, the trail climbs Thunder Mountain (8,587'), Telegraph Peak (8,985'), and Timber Mountain (8,271'). Your journey is complete after a short road walk from the Icehouse Canyon Trailhead back to Bear Canyon and the Mount Baldy Visitor Center.
Taking this route is a great alternative to Mount Baldy's more popular trails. The route is ideal for those seeking a challenging trek with scenic views and a significant amount of elevation gain.
PARKING
There are a few parking spaces available at the Mount Baldy Visitor Center. There is also street parking nearby.
