Donnell Vista is a small roadside walking area on Highway 108 leading to an observation point with wide views across the dramatic Sierra Nevada landscape.
Located about 15 miles east of the town of Strawberry, Donnell Vista offers easy and quick access to a dramatic part of the landscape along a road with relatively few options for such. Within the area is a loop trail, half of which is paved and handicapped accessible, that weaves and descends a quarter mile. Along this walk are viewpoints looking down on Donnell Lake Reservoir below and the high peaks rising sheer above the Stanislaus River.
With a total descent of about 150', the end point of the short walk is an overlook point with interpretive signs and views stretching from the waters below to the granite walls toward the east. This scenic area offers views of the volcanic- and glacier shaped landscape on par with some of the other more popular National Parks in the Sierra Nevada.
The total length of the loop path is just under a half mile. Those looking to just stretch their legs can easily scramble right up the granite slope immediately next to the parking area and take in a quick view, rather than walking the path. However the views from the walking trail far exceed those from anywhere else here.
There is a vault toilet here, however there are no other amenities. There are two RV parking spots, in addition to the normal car parking area. Bicycles are not permitted on the paved path.
Highway 108 may close seasonally due to winter conditions.
