The Duck Pass Trail to Purple Lake is a 16-mile out-and-back trail located outside of Mammoth Lakes, California. This scenic adventure features pristine alpine lakes, expansive views, and interesting geologic features. With tons of nearby lakes and trails this area is a popular recreation destination for trail runners, hikers, and backpackers.

This moderately trafficked route gains approximately 4,700 feet of elevation throughout its length. Starting from the Duck Pass Trailhead the trail begins with an exposed ascent towards Arrowhead Lake. The trail crosses up and over Duck Pass and traverses along the western shores of Duck Lake. The scenic Duck Lake offers an ideal setting for a break or a camping trip if you plan to spend the night in the wilderness.  From Duck Lake's southwest edge, the route continues south. Here, the trail connects with the John Muir Trail (JMT) and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Continuing along the JMT/PCT for a few miles, you will eventually reach Purple Lake. Return to the starting point from Purple Lake by turning around and retracing your steps.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • This trail takes place at a high elevation. Make sure you are prepared and allow yourself some time to adjust if you are not used to exercising above 9,000 feet.

  • All water collected on trail must be treated.

  • Always check the weather and trail conditions in advance. Due to the high elevation of this route there is always the potential for storms and/or snowy conditions, even in the warmer months.
