Kealoha Beach Park, named for former state politician James Kealoha, is a small wedge of a park nestled between two coves that are great for a variety of water activities along the Hilo-area coastline.
The park has a couple tables with grills, bathrooms, a small grassy area and some rocky shore that is okay for exploring. It's common to see the locals fishing from the asphalt parking lot that is built to the water's edge in some parts. And the primary activity here is swimming.
A cove on the park's western edge is protected by several layers of lava rock acting as a breakwater. As a result, the cove tends to stay calm and serene, making it a good place for children to swim or to snorkel around in. The parking lot is often full of cars taking in the view with cars facing toward the sea - however a lone tree is all that offers shade during the afternoon hours.
On the east side is a much larger that opens out to the sea. Waves wash in here, where kids can be seen bodyboarding. Surfers will often enter here and paddle out to the larger waves beyond the cove. Fed in part by a mix of freshwater spring flow along with that of the sea, the water at Kealoha tends to be a bit cooler than other beach areas on the island.
Kealoha is a bit quieter than some of the other beach parks, and has a good amount more parking, however on weekends the park can get very busy.
There are no lifeguards present here. The park is open daily from 7am to 7pm.
