Ho'Okena Campground lies on the grounds of Ho'Okena Beach Park, a quiet park in an historical fishing village slightly off of the beaten path along the Big Island's western shore.
The campground is a spacious area of sandy beachside along with palm-shaded dirt clearings where campers are able to set up their tents on a first come, first serve basis. Tables, grills and showers are set throughout the campground. There are two portable toilets in the adjacent parking lot, however a short walk away is the more modern beach park bathroom building which contains flush toilets and sinks.
Managed by Camp Ho'Okena and the Friends of Ho'okena Beach Park, the campground offers a seasonal concession stand, kayak and snorkel rentals, and wifi available for a small fee.
Camp fees are $20 per person per night for non-Hawaii residents, or $5 per person per night for those with Hawaii state ID. The campground requests that visitors register online at least 72 hours in advance through their website, with leftover spaces available day of cash-only on a first come, first serve basis.
While much of the equipment at the beach park and campground may be aging, Ho'Okena's distance from any sizeable town lends this area the feel of old Hawaii, offering visitors the chance to camp out a the ocean's edge beneath the cover of palm trees.
Pets are not allowed. Camping is tent only.
