Moorten Botanical Garden is a privately owned botanic garden that displays thousands of cacti, succulents and arid desert plants along a weaving dirt walking path.
Built with an entertaining creation story of a gold miner/Hollywood actor turned desert plant salesman in the late 1930's, the garden today surrounds the Moorten family home located just south of downtown Palm Springs, where visitors can walk the grounds containing flora from a variety of arid biomes, including Mojave Desert, South African, Mexican and Baja Californian. A greenhouse "cactarium" contains a huge variety of unique and whimsical cactus species that look unlike most cacti most visitors have ever seen previously.
In addition to the plants growing on the grounds, there are also crystals, birds and reptiles and old mining equipment on display. Garden employees are available to answer questions as well.
While there are a good number of trees throughout the property, the gardens hours of 10-4 daily (closed Wednesdays) mean that you'll likely be visiting at the hottest part of the day. There are benches and some shaded areas, however visitors should be prepared to spend their time in Palm Springs' hot conditions during their visit.
Admission is $5 per adult and $2 per child.
