Willard Bay State Park is located right off Interstate 15, slightly north of Ogden, Utah. One might assume that this is a part of the Great Salt Lake, but it is actually a freshwater reservoir. Willard Bay is truly a water lover’s dream. There are countless recreational opportunities and great camping options here.
Willard Bay Reservoir is a 9,900 acre body of freshwater that rests atop the Great Salt Lake flood plain. It is separated from the Great Salt Lake by an earth filled dike that was constructed to store water from the Ogden and Weber rivers so that it could be used for irrigation, drinking water, and recreation. The area opened to the public as a state park in 1966.
Fishing is an extremely popular activity at Willard Bay. Crappie, bluegill, catfish, bass and wiper are all common catches. The reservoir is also great for boaters including water skiers and jet skiers. Human powered activities such as kayaking and stand up paddle boarding are also popular.
Willard Bay is also a popular birding spot. Migratory birds and fishing species are commonly seen in the fall and winter. In fact, this is one of the best places in the country to spot Bald Eagles during the winter season.
There are two main areas within the state park - the North Marina (main area) and South Marina. The South Marina area doesn’t have as many amenities, but offers a boat launch and day use area with ample parking, as well as a campground.
The North Marina is the optimal place to visit. There are several day use areas. The small Willard Bay Pond is a great, family friendly place that is offset from the main reservoir. Beautiful, long sandy beaches line the reservoir at places like Eagle Beach and Pelican Beach. Cabanas also line the beaches and make for the perfect picnic destination. Eagle or Pelican Beach make for the perfect swimming destination to enjoy the warm summer waters.
The North Marina of course also offers a boat launch area, docks and boat slips. There is also a small general store. ClubRec located here offers rentals of everything from pontoon boats to fishing boats to jet skis.
Lastly there are two campgrounds in the North Marina area. Many of the campsites offer full hookups, and there are even 3 cabins that can be rented.
As you can see, there is a lot to do at Willard Bay State Park so be sure to visit the next time you are in the area!
