Steep Creek Overlook is located along Highway 12 at an elevation of nearly 9,400 feet. The high elevation means that the overlook road is snow covered during the winters, and only open to vehicles during the warmer months. The overlook provides spectacular views and is well worth the stop if you are passing through this area!

Utah’s Highway 12 is a spectacular drive, and it’s interesting to note that this stretch of road over Boulder Mountain wasn’t paved until 1985. Prior to that the road would be closed from late November through late May, isolating the small community of Boulder from Torrey.

A vast landscape stretches below you. You’ll see a labyrinth of canyons, mesas, and rolling slickrock. The Steep Creek area is also a prime habit for all kinds of wildlife. Strands of aspen and Gambel oak interweave with open meadows, and acorns draw elk, deer, bear, smaller mammals and turkey. Predators like cougar, bobcat, hawks and owls also are found here.

Be sure to check out some of the other viewpoints as you drive along Highway 12 from Torrey to Escalante.
