Skyline Trail Loop is a 6.8-mile loop trail located in Griffith Park, a public recreation area located near Los Angeles, California. The loop offers a combination of single and double track trails as well as picnic places, wildflowers, and views of both the city and mountains. This loop features a moderate climb and is accessible year round.
Parking is available at the Merry-Go-Round parking lot, as well as some spots along the road leading up to the parking lot. Water and bathrooms are available at the trailhead and parking areas as well as throughout Griffith Park.
This route takes you along the Crystal Springs Trail for the first two miles. The Crystal Springs Trail is a double track trail that runs parallel to Crystal Springs Road and the Wilson and Harding Golf Course. It is popular with trail runners, hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.
You will leave Crystal Spring Trail when you reach the Skyline Trail trailhead at the north end of the Los Angeles Zoo parking area. From here you will begin a challenging, yet visually rewarding, two mile climb up the hillside. From the Skyline Trail you will be treated to views of the Verdugo and San Gabriel Mountains as well as the cities of Burbank and Glendale.
In two more miles, you will leave the Skyline Trail and turn left onto the Oak Canyon Trail. In 1.4 miles you will continue on Mineral Wells Trail, passing by Amir’s Garden (a nice rest spot with water and benches) several picnic areas and the remnants of the Old Los Angeles Zoo.
Mineral Wells Trail will eventually lead you to the Merry-Go-Round parking area and back to the start.
