The Prairie Overlook Trail at Ebey's Landing provides a casual trek through a historical reserve to breathtaking views of the Puget Sound. Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, located on Whidbey Island, was established in 1973 to preserve the history and culture of this rural area. While visiting the reserve itself is free, there are three state parks located within its boundaries that require a Discover Pass.

The Prairie Overlook Trail begins at a trailhead located near the historic Sunnyside Cemetery. Begin heading west towards the bluffs, and enjoy spectacular views of the Cascade and Olympic Mountain ranges. As you make your way through rolling fields of wheat, keep an eye out for wildlife such as seabirds, eagles, and coyotes. Soon, you will arrive at the historic Jacob Ebey House. Continue along the Prairie Overlook Trail and after about 0.8 miles you will arrive at a junction with sweeping views of the bluffs and Puget Sound below. After taking in the stunning views, you can turn back to the parking lot and end with a total of 1.6 miles out-and-back.

The Prairie Overlook Trail is an ideal choice for hikers, history buffs, and photographers alike. Whidbey Island is rich with history of the native tribes who first inhabited the land and the military exploits that shaped the future of the region. For those seeking a family friendly hike with opportunities to learn about the local history, the Prairie Overlook Trail is an excellent option.
