The Historic Dike System Trail is an easy walking trail that follows a 2.3 mile loop around Fort Pulaski and Cockspur Island within the Fort Pulaski National Monument

The dike system was designed by Robert E. Lee with the purpose of regulating drainage and tidal effects on the island, which aided in construction of the fort structures. The trail begins at the Visitor Center and heads out to the island perimeter, following a wide flat grass emergency road as it traces a large circle around the day use area of the island. The hike offers different perspectives to view the fort from, and takes visitors along the Savannah River on the north side of Cockspur Island.

There isn't much scenery along this hike, however it does offer some views that other visitors to the monument may miss out on, and heads to some lesser visited areas of the fort grounds.

The trail tends to be flat, and is pretty easy. Though it can get incredibly wet following wet conditions.

There are no amenities of any kind along the hike, however there is water and bathrooms located at the Visitor Center and at the fort building.

Pets are permitted if on leash. The trail is subject to all National Monument rules and entrance fees.
