Bring your kayak, canoe or other non-powered boat to Prompton Lake in northeastern Pennsylvania for a peaceful and scenic flatwater paddle. Motorboats with up to 10hp motors are also permitted at this rural lake located in Prompton State Park.
The 290-acre lake was created by the construction of the Prompton Dam, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project completed in 1960 to reduce flood risks to nearby communities. The dam area remains under the control of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Adventurers are permitted to get close, but may not climb on the dam.
A boat launch is conveniently located off PA 170, mid-way between the dam and the end of the lake. Here, adventurers will find a steep boat launch, small parking area, portable restrooms and a few picnic tables situated underneath trees for a shaded picnic before venturing onto the lake.
Nestled between beautiful forested hills, paddlers can traverse this long lake from close to the dam on one end, to where the lake meets the Lackawaxen River at the opposite end.
Paddlers have a fabulous view of the 1230-foot long earthen dam. At 147 feet high, the dam looks impressive from water level. Kayakers can land near the dam area to stretch their legs, walk close to the dam, use the portable restrooms or enjoy a snack at the picnic pavilion.
The shoreline has other locations along the length of the lake where paddlers can easily land to stretch their legs or cast a fishing line.
As paddlers approach the end of the lake opposite from the dam, there are large areas of waterlilies. Time it right, and the massive area of blooming flowers is quite a sight to see. Paddle into the waterlily patch and get a close-up view of the blossoms. Typically, waterlilies in this region will be flowering by late spring and continue adorning the lake through much of the summer.
Navigate beyond the waterlilies to see where the lake meets the river. Caution: water levels may get low so beware of the rocky bottom.
