Lamoille Valley Rail Trail - Hyde Park to Johnson

The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail is a crushed stone path spanning much of Northern Vermont. As of 2021, 33 miles have been completed, and 93 miles are expected to be completed by 2023 to make this the longest rail trail in New England! This path is versatile for use in all seasons, with opportunities for biking and running in the summer, and cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. The section from Hyde Park to Johnson is a perfect beginner-level nordic ski adventure. Parking can be found in Hyde Park just off of Depot Street and is well-marked. An alternative lot is at the Johnson Trailhead off Railroad Street just outside of the main downtown.

This section of the trail is especially scenic with views of Smugglers’ Notch and peaks such as Whiteface and White Rocks. The beginning section from Hyde Park is slightly downhill, then the path is very flat as it crosses fields on the way to Johnson. There are four early road crossings in the beginning section of the trail, then the trail is more consecutive. The trail follows the Lamoille River and has some good opportunities for viewing wildlife such as birds and beavers. As skiers approach the falls there is a bridge crossing over the river. The Dog’s Head Falls are marked on the trail at mile 4 from Hyde Park and are just to the north. This spot on the Lamoille River has large cascading waterfalls and large boulders that are scenic with ice in the winter months. Just past this landmark the trail reaches the trailhead in Johnson, where skiers can also park. Following the trail past Johnson skiers pass more fields with scenic mountain views and should encounter more easy terrain and low crowds.

In the winter the rail trail is shared with snowmobiles, so it is important to follow the trail courtesy rules to keep to the right and watch for snowmobile traffic. The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail is a perfect local opportunity for outdoor adventure in all seasons and an excellent way to enjoy Vermont’s scenery.
