Perched at an elevation just short of 5,000' in elevation is Horton Creek, a BLM-operated campground at the edge of the valley with sweeping panoramic views over the area.
The campground consists of 49 sites along a single gravel road that climbs up the alluvial plain. Sites are simple, with each containing a table, fire pit and a hook to keep food away from ground critters. Several vault toilets are spread throughout the campground.
The campground as a whole is very minimal as far as amenities go. There is a single water spigot at the entrance of the campground, there's a short interpretive nature trail at the lower portion of the campground, and a few gravel forest roads head through the campground, which hikers and mountain bikers tend to drive up and make use of.
Horton Creek Campground lies about 12 miles west of the town of Bishop, which has markets, restaurants, gas and amenities. With a price of $8 nightly during the tourist season and $5 nightly during the winter months, Horton Creek is a very affordable option right in the middle of the regions climbing areas, mountain bike trails, lakes, ATV trails and mountain hikes.
The downside is that most sites have no shade, though the higher elevation of the site keeps temperatures a little cooler than further down in the valley below. An RV dump station is located at the campground entrance, with a $5 fee for use.
