The hike or trail run to Signal Hill Lookout in Dunedin, New Zealand is the most direct way to enjoy the astonishing views of the Otago Harbor from the city from a viewpoint at nearly 1,300 feet, including a beautiful vista of the North East Valley to the northeast. While Opoho Road and Signal Hill Road lead all the way to the summit, and form a nice route for running or biking, there are also mountain bike trails that are suitable for trail running to reach the summit. This route is more steep but also more direct, leaving from Logan Park. If following the road route, runners can also loop through the breathtaking Dunedin Botanic Gardens, which offer many additional running trails.

For an exciting 7-mile loop route, follow Opoho Road from its intersection with North Road for 0.4 miles to Signal Hill Road. Turning left, follow the road up to the summit of Signal Hill at 2.2 miles. After enjoying the views, hikers and runners can choose from the many mountain biking trails down the hill converging towards Butts Road, which leads to the Dunedin Botanic Gardens and eventually back to the starting point. The Botanic Gardens, the first such gardens in New Zealand, feature many easy walking trails and interesting plants, making it a great place to end your hike or run.

Nearby the summit of Signal Hill is a monument for New Zealand’s centennial in 1940 as well as 2 bronze statues representing “History” and “The Thread of Life”. The monument was constructed in the 1950s, following World War II. There is also a piece of rock from Edinburgh Castle on the monument, since Edinburgh and Dunedin are sister cities. And in addition to the rich and interesting historical significance of Signal Hill, the lookout also offers beautiful sweeping views of the city and harbour, and an excellent workout with the steep climb!
