Grout Pond Campground is located in Southern Vermont in Green Mountain National Forest. Covering more than 1,600 acres with over 10 miles of multipurpose trails, Grout Pond Recreation Area is popular with hikers, anglers, paddlers, and winter sport enthusiasts. The campground is small, with just 18 sites. Seven of these are located off the parking lot and can be used for car and RV camping. The other 11 are dispersed along the shore. Six are waterfront and can be reached by paddling or hiking. The other five are hike-in.
Grout Pond is extremely busy during the summer months, with the parking lot filling up by noon on most days. The campsites, which can not be reserved, fill up quickly on weekends, and most weekdays during July and August. The campground is open year round, though (the road is not plowed in winter), and you will have your pick of prime waterfront sites in September and October. There will be no bugs to worry about, and the colors will take your breath away!
The farthest hike-in site is about a mile from the parking lot, and all of the waterfront sites are an easy 10-minute paddle from the day use area. There is a toilet near the picnic area, and there are two more off the camp loop trail. There is a water faucet located near the picnic area, or you can filter water directly from the lake. An unloading area near the boat launch makes it easy to get your gear from the car to the water, and if you score a waterfront site, you can pack that extra cooler into the canoe. All tent sites are equipped with a picnic table, a fire pit, and a tent platform to prevent erosion. Don’t bring a huge tent - it won’t fit on the platforms, which are designed to accomodate a three- or four-person tent. Sites 10 and 11 have two tent platforms each.
There are lots of trails in the area, but none of them allow bikes. The 2.6-mile pond loop is especially scenic with great views all the way around. The Catamount Trail is a long-distance cross-country ski trail that runs through the campground, and there are snowmobile trails nearby as well.
