Horsecollar Ruins Overlook

A short trail through the rugged desert landscape of Natural Bridges National Monument takes you to an overlook where you get to see the large Native American ruins along the valley floor below. Horsecollar Ruins have several square and round Kiva built by the ancestral Puebloans about 700 years ago. While the lookout is quite high above the ruins, there is a strenuous hike down to them and Sipapu and Kachina Bridges. From the lookout there are two interpretive signs to help you learn more about these fascinating ruins and the people who built them.

There are some great sights along the short overlook trail in addition to the ruins including a gooseneck canyon and the cottonwood trees that line the sandy wash below. There are some handrails to assist you along the steep parts of the slickrock, but otherwise there are some open and steep drops, so keep an eye on the kiddos. Bring some binoculars if you have the chance.
