This beach is different than most on Hilton Head, which are known for their wide, uninterrupted sand and surf. Mitchelville, however, is more of a marshy and rocky beach with tiny waves. It does have sand that is nice for lounging and walking on, but there are more rocks, shells, and plant debris scattered around than on other beaches. These qualities, along with thin crowds, make Mitchelville the place for tranquil beach combing, fishing, birdwatching, or just napping in the sun. Rather than overlooking the open Atlantic like most views from Hilton Head, this beach overlooks St. Helena Sound of the Harbor River, across to St. Helena, and Parris Islands.
The parking area is tucked behind some quiet neighborhoods on the island's northeast end. There are restrooms, outdoor showers, and trash cans available. Lifeguards are not on duty. Like all Hilton Head beaches, dogs are not allowed between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Labor Day weekend to Memorial Day weekend; otherwise they are allowed if kept under control and cleaned up after.
