Tybee North Beach + Lighthouse

Of the beaches on Tybee, North Beach has the greatest diversity of scenery to offer. It's position on the tip of the island near the mouth of the Savannah River provides birdwatching and sunset views on one side next to surfing and sunrise views on the other. History is on display as well--a 100-year-old lighthouse, a 19th-century military fort, and a museum dedicated to the island's past. All is open to the public (entry fee required), including the 178 stairs to the top of the lighthouse. Another attraction for some is watching the many huge freight ships in the distance as they approach Savannah Harbor from ports all over the world.

Beach access is free, though parking is $2 per hour just like everywhere on Tybee. This beach does not have the host of shops and dining found along South Beach, and it is therefore generally quieter, but there is one laid-back beachfront restaurant and cafe here. There are also changing rooms, outdoor showers, and picnic tables near the beach. Though the parking and access area is likely to get crowded on busy weekends, this wide and long beach has plenty of room to spread out. North Beach is the perfect place to lounge in a quiet spot, take a long solitary walk, or catch a wave all to yourself.
