Tybee is often called "Savannah's Beach" because of its popularity with residents and visitors of the city, which is removed from the ocean by islands and marsh. At only about 30 minutes away, Tybee is indeed the place to go, and South Beach is the really hot spot. The beach along Tybee's Atlantic shore is continuous, but South Beach is generally considered the section between 14th Street and 19th Street, with activity centered around the pier at 16th Street.

This beach is loved for its uninterrupted expanse of sand, crashing surf, and surrounding activities. It is in the part of town with the most restaurants, shops, and hotels. On the beach are volleyball nets, chairs for rent, and bench swings up for grabs. The pier has concession stands, tables, benches, and pavilions, and is open for fishing with proper license. There is a large public parking lot here, though it can fill up on busy days. Other parking is available along city streets or in more distant lots. Beach and pier access are free, but all public parking in Tybee is $2 per hour.

When visiting the pier, families may want to check out the next-door Marine Science Center, a fun little aquarium with educational displays and programs about surrounding sea life.
