Situated on the southeast end of Green Mountain Reservoir right at the point where the Blue River feeds into the body of water built by the Bureau of Reclamation, Prairie Point Campground is an ideal and easily accessilbe spot for an overnight camping excursion. Roughly a 30-minute drive north of Dillon or 1.5 hours from Denver, Prairie Point Campground and the reservoir's other campgrounds are most popular amongst anglers and those looking to escape the hustle of the I-70 corridor. Green Mountain Reservoir is stocked annually with rainbow trout, lake trout, brown trout and kokanee. And, with glimpses of the Gore Mountains to the west, the desert setting has a way of bringing calm to those who visit.
The campground itself is fairly primitive, only offering vault toilets and no potable water, so be sure to pack everything that you'll need. The campground also doesn't have direct boat access to the reservoir, so you'll have to head to the small town of Heeney to put-in at the boat ramp. Some bait and tackle supplies can also be found in Heeney as well.
Note: Prairie Point Campground is typically closed from early May through the end of September. For details call the Dillon Ranger Station at 970.468.5400.
