Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge is a National Natural Landmark and home to 6,405 acres of wetland and forest that provide habitat for diverse species of wildlife. Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge offers something for the whole family, and it is great for beginners and bird watchers. Venture out on the trails for a chance to see deer, moose, bear, beavers, snowshoe hares, turtles, and over 200 species of birds. Most of the trails are flat and easy, and the Mud Pond Trail is even wheelchair accessible, making this a fantastic place for people of all ages and abilities.

Hike to Mud Pond, Little Cherry Pond, or Cherry Pond to look for birds and take in the scenery. The view of the northern Presidential Range, including Mount Washington, along the Shore Path can’t be beat. Cherry Pond was once a glacial lake, and if you look around for the huge rocks, you might even find glacial erratics along the trails. Take the kids on a scenic bike ride along the Pondicherry Rail Trail and Presidential Range Recreation Trail to see wildflowers and visit Moorhen and Cedar Marsh. Then either return the same way or continue to complete an 8-mile loop utilizing the Owls Head Highway and Hazen Road.
