Looking for a way to escape the crowds in Newport and Jamestown? Head over to Rome Point! Officially known as the John H. Chafee Nature Preserve, this is where the locals come to hike, bike, run, and enjoy some time by the water. And best of all, it’s free – including parking!

This is a great area to come to if you have young children and worry about them by the water. As part of Bissel Cove, the water here reacts to the tides and not much else. It also does not get very deep, so it is not recommended if you are looking for somewhere to swim or boogie board.  In addition to soaking up some rays and playing in the water, locals will also come to the Bissel Cove side to find clams, mussels, and to fish. If you plan to fish, please make sure to check the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s website to see if you are required to obtain a fishing or shellfishing permit.

Access to the Bissel Cove beach area of Rome Point is located about a mile into the trails. The walk is very easy, though you will find it to be overgrown in some areas. Dogs are allowed (leash required), and stay alert for other traffic while you are walking, including those on bikes. There are no bathrooms, picnic tables or other amenities at this part of Rome Point, and there are also no trash cans, so be prepared to carry out what you carry in.
