Sandy Point State Park, opened on June 5, 1952, is located at the base of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge just outside of Baltimore and Washington D.C. It is known for its brightly colored orange sandy beaches and many areas to setup for a picnic or barbecue. A marina and boat dock are also included within the 768-acre park.
The beaches and picnic areas of Sandy Point offer spectacular views of the Bay Bridge, visible from almost anywhere within the park. The beach is partially guarded from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and it can be enjoyed by all. There are bath and shower facilities and concession stands located near the beach. Sandy Point offers great fishing and crabbing spots, such as the jetty next to the Bay Bridge or from certain sections of the beach.
Sandy Point State Park also offers many areas that are perfect for a family picnic, and they will be filled with people doing so on a weekend in the summer. There are a few grills and picnic tables already in place, but it is recommended to come prepared to use your own equipment, because these spots fill quickly. Bathrooms are also located within the picnic areas.
If you're looking to explore the Chesapeake by boat, then the marina and boat launch at Sandy Point is the perfect starting point, again offering magnificent views of the Bay Bridge. The marina consists of 22 launching ramps and six finger piers designed for shorter use and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
