Incahuasi Island is made completely of coral, which sits above Solar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat. This unique landscape is situated in the Andes Mountains. The area was part of a massive prehistoric lake and is the remains of an ancient volcano.
The island is a day hike that is included in the natural wonders that surround the tourist town of Uyuni. Other nearby areas include the train cemetery and mirror pool.
The famous mirror pool is actually a puddle in the salt that moves its location every day. Sometimes it's flat and tranquil, offering stunning reflections that attract photographers from all over. On other nights, the puddle can move into an area of the salt that is full of tire tracks and mud. The conditions of the desert depend on the day, so vacationers who dream of a beautiful photo should plan for disagreeable weather.
The most scenic route to the tourist town of Uyuni is by train from the city of Oruro after a bus ride from La Paz. Most of the guides are located across the street from the Uyuni train station. However, there's no easy way out of town, since most of the buses and trains leave early in the morning.
Note that It's difficult to find amenities throughout the country of Bolivia. It's important to obtain the correct visa before entering Bolivia. The documents can cost approximately $200 and take several days to get, including vaccinations. Military police often ask visitors to show I.D. throughout South America.
