Wilmington Notch is an area that has been carved out over the millennia by the forces of nature, creating sheer rock walls, towering cliffs and thundering waterfalls. Winding its way through Wilmington Notch is the West Branch Ausable River, which offers prime fishing and picturesque locations.
One such location is the Wilmington Notch Campground, which lies along the river at a point near 40-foot Wilmington Notch Falls.
The New York State-run campground offers 54 tent and trailer sites, has three bathrooms, one shower building and picnic tables for campers at a day-use picnic area. Hiking and fishing are available at nearby locations on the river. A trail leads down the steep embankment to a spot to view the falls.
Less than a half-mile away, guests can visit Whiteface Mountain, where hiking trails lead along the river and along Stag Brook, which is known for waterfalls. Gondola rides up Little Whiteface are available, or you can drive up to the summit of Whiteface by way of the Veterans’ Memorial Highway.
Also nearby is the Wilmington Flume Trail System, with 13 different trails and swimming and fishing holes. The Flume area has become a popular destination. The Wilmington Flume itself is a narrow gorge where the West Branch Ausable River flows through creating three distinct waterfalls. While people do swim here, it can be a dangerous place in times of high water.
Eight miles from the campground, guests can visit the Olympic village of Lake Placid for shopping, restaurants, movies, tours and much more. You can paddle, swim and fish on both Mirror Lake and Lake Placid, and scenic plain flights over the High Peaks are available from Adirondack Flying Service for those who want to see the mountains up close.
When campers return from their adventures, they can recount the day’s events while sitting next to a fire.
