Located within John Boyd Thacher State Park, Thompson’s Lake State Campground in East Berne, New York, hosts 140 wooded campsites, a beach, hiking trails, and an array of recreational activities for campers and day-use guests.
The campground is open year round and offers a host of recreational activities from swimming and fishing to hiking and boating. The campground boasts a volleyball court, baseball field, boat rentals, horseshoe pits, a large playing field, swing sets, and a playground. Winter activities available at the campground include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.
The nearby Emma Treadwell Nature Center, which is situated on the Thompson’s Lake shoreline, is accessible to campers and features activities and educational programs with interactive exhibits.
The trail system, made up of a number of different trails totaling over 15.5 miles, links the campground and main area of Thacher Park along the Helderberg Escarpment together.
Those who wish to follow the trail to the Helderberg Escarpment will find a visitor center, built in 2017, and trails that follow the escarpment with waterfalls. Enjoy views out to the Adirondack, Berkshire, and White mountains and nearby areas like the City of Albany with the towers of the Empire State Plaza rising distinctly.
Thacher Park also has a number of picnic areas with fixed-position grills and picnic tables.
