Monument Falls in Wilmington, New York, is a 5-foot waterfall that forms on the West Branch of the Ausable River. It features a stunning view of Whiteface Mountain in the distance and several fishing holes.
The falls are named after the two large stone monuments in the parking area that commemorate both the 50th and 100th anniversaries of New York State’s Forest Preserve.
While the falls are small in height, the surrounding views enhance the visit. With Whiteface Mountain in the distance, New York’s fifth-tallest peak at 4,865 feet, and well-worn footpaths along the river, the scenery makes this a picturesque location that receives thousands of visitors each year.
This area has also become a destination for fishermen because the waters offer an abundance of trout. Fishermen normally fish downstream from the falls or farther upstream, so there's no need to worry about crowding.
From the parking area, walk toward the river and follow the guardrail to view the falls. There is a footpath that visitors can follow to stay out of the road. The falls split between a horseshoe-shaped slide on the near side of the river and a curtain-type cascade on the far side.
