Meet Save Our Canyons

WHO WE ARE

Save Our Canyons is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is dedicated to protecting the beauty and wildness of the Wasatch canyons, mountains, and foothills.

We are professionals, recreationalists, environmentalists, outdoor industry representatives, cabin owners, city dwellers – a committe of citizens working to Save Our Canyons! Since 1972 Save Our Canyons has worked to protect the open spaces, watershed, wildlife habitat, recreational access, and natural beauty of the Wasatch Range.

WHAT WE DO

Save Our Canyons is the only organization specifically dedicated to protecting the unique landscapes of the Wasatch Range. The snow and streams of the Wasatch Mountains are the water source for over half a million people living below in the Salt Lake Valley, and it is also home to diverse wildlife species such as moose, elk, deer and cutthroat trout.

The Wasatch Range encompasses a patchwork of jurisdiction and land management that requires involvement from federal, state, city and county governments. Save Our Canyons and our members partner with many local and national organizations and community groups to effectively tackle threats to the Wasatch Mountains and build opportunities that further our mission of protecting the beauty and wildness of this range.

The organization has been closely involved in the creation of several Wilderness Areas within the Wasatch Mountains including Lone Peak, Twin Peaks, and Mount Olympus. These areas were identified for protection under the Wilderness Act due to their unique and wild characteristics, which Save Our Canyons works to protect and expand. These wilderness areas attract throngs of recreationalists to climb granite cirques, hike meadows loaded with wildflowers, fish streams for native cutthroat, and backcountry ski or snowboard in their idyllic alpine lines.

Save Our Canyons relies on the support of individual members, local businesses, and volunteers for our decades of successful conservation efforts.

We rely on a wide spectrum of talented volunteers to do everything from writing detailed policy comments to tabling at farmers markets or helping with trail work. Save Our Canyons has a rapidly growing membership that contributes a majority of the funding keeping our work progressing day after day, year after year. You can become a member by signing up and paying annual dues, which are used to finance our quarterly newsletters and contribute toward our many ongoing policy efforts. Members receive newsletters, action alerts, updates, invitations to special events, and more!
